New HEMI Swap

Do you have Hemi swap information to add? scottm@thehemi.com
We need your help, HEMI swappers, to make this section complete.

With the increasing popularity of the new 5.7L and 6.1L HEMI engines, the idea of a "new" HEMI swap is becoming more of an idea for many project builders. On this page I'm hoping to document what people are doing, and how they're doing it, so that more of these "New HEMI Swap" projects can be completed.

Where do you get the HEMI engine?
Junkyard pulls have become increasing common sources as the HEMI volumes increase and accidents enter into the equation. Want a new crate engine? Street & Performance offers both 5.7L HEMI and 6.1L HEMI crate motors. Bob Mazzolini Racing offers both carb and fuel injected 5.7L HEMI crate motors (they do not require O2 sensors or the ignition key security features). You can order 6.1 HEMI motors with 470-hp to 610-hp from PFC Enterprises!

Where to pull from? See the roadmap for info!

Check out the 5.7L HEMI LX Power Package Upgrade from Mopar in case you want to check out options for getting 40-rwhp more out of your 5.7L HEMI.
What about the HEMI computer controls?
HEMI engines pulled from the junkyard should be able to come with the stock ECM and wiring harness. If you're unable to to get one from the junkyard, you can try Street & Performance to see what they have available for you. PFC Enterprises offers an ECU with their motors that's completely editable. I'm not sure if they'll sell them standalone without a complete motor, but you can ask them! Hotwire Auto (aka Squier, Inc.) sells various wiring harnesses for custom HEMI swaps.
What transmission should/can you use?
Stock transmissions pulled from junkyards, wrecks, etc.
Tremec 5-speed manual with an adapter kit (from Keisler).
TKO 5-speed manual for small block Mopars from Dark Horse Performance.
Torqueflite A-727 transmissions should bolt up ok. When using a 727 tranny, you will need to use the older starter and cut the ring-gear off the HEMI flexplate.

Flex plate and trans spacer for 727s and 904s available from XV Motosports.

McLeod is going to release a modular big block bellhousing.
McLeod also offers both quality aluminum and steel flywheels.
What to do about the HEMI motor mounts?
Vehicle Specific...

318/340/360- Adapter plates for the 5.7 and 6.1 HEMIs from Street & Performance
(although I'm told these may work on E-bodies, but they don't work on A-bodies)
A-bodies- Mounts are available from TTI Exhaust
(moves the crank up 3/8" and you will need to use an oil-filter block-off plate)
How about a whole new front suspension?
Vehicle Specific...

1962-1976 A-Body- RMS Chassis Components has a coilover setup for 5.7/6.1 HEMIs
1962-1972 B-Body- RMS Chassis Components has a coilover setup for 5.7/6.1 HEMIs
1970-1974 E-Body- RMS Chassis Components has a coilover setup for 5.7/6.1 HEMIs
What to do about the exhaust manifolds?
Vehicle Specific...

1967-1976 A-Body- 5.7 HEMI headers from TTI Exhaust
1962-1974 B-Body- 5.7 HEMI headers from TTI Exhaust or p/n 5020-1 from Hooker 1970-1974 E-Body- 5.7 HEMI headers from TTI Exhaust or p/n 5020-1 from Hooker
What to do about the HEMI oil pan?
The rear sump oil pan on the new HEMI might not fit in all applications. Charlie's Oil Pans (330-825-3586) of Norton, Ohio has created a mid sump aluminum oil pan that's been known to work. If you go with a custom aluminum oil pan with thicker mounting rails, be sure to use longer oil pan fasteners at the front and rear of the pan. Perhaps 5mm thicker.

Milidon offers a mid sump oil pan, p/n 3100. The mid sump pickup tube is p/n 18331.

Vehicle Specific...

1967-1976 A-Body- Check your clearance between the rear of the idler arm and a custom aluminum oil pan (like one sourced from Charlie's)
What to do about the radiator?
The 6.1 HEMI has both radiator hoses on the passenger side. Remember this when you are having a radiator built for your application. The truck 5.7 HEMI has the upper hose on the driver's side. Flex-a-Lite electric fans are the way to go.
What to do about the fuel tanks?
Vehicle Specific...

1970-72 E-Body- Rick's Hot Rod Shop sells SS tanks setup for fuel injection
1968-70 B-Body- Rick's Hot Rod Shop sells SS tanks setup for fuel injection
What are some other known issues to deal with?
Vehicle Specific...

A/C Cars- Grab an underhood condenser kit from BPE to keep your A/C
1968 GTX- Front sump on 6.1 HEMIs will not clear the K-member
1968 GTX- Oil filter won't clear K-member; remote oil filter needed
Does anyone make all-inclusive install packages?
Vehicle Specific...

A-Body- PFC Enterprises sells a kit complete with headers, pan, and mounts
B-Body- PFC Enterprises sells a kit complete with headers, pan, and mounts
E-Body- PFC Enterprises sells a kit complete with headers, pan, and mounts
