Alfa Romeo might not be as popular as it used to be back in the day, and its current lineup only consists of the Giulia Sedan and the Stelvio SUV. However, as the old saying goes, quality beats quantity, and that’s exactly the case with Alfa Romeo, especially when it comes to the range-topping Giulia Quadrifoglio Sedan.

Aside from boasting timeless and unique exterior design cues that have always been a huge selling point for Alfa Romeos, the Giulia Quadrifoglio provides head-rearing performance despite being a four-door sedan, and that’s mostly due to the Ferrari-derived twin-turbocharged V6 that sits underneath its hood.

Starting at $80,000, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio performs well enough to compete with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG C63s, the BMW M3 and M4, and the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing. Here’s a detailed look at the engine that makes the Giulia Quadrifoglio so powerful.

Instead of developing its very own engine - which is by no means an easy feat, Stellantis - Alfa Romeo’s parent company, has an ongoing engine development collaboration with Ferrari, meaning that several vehicles among Ferrari, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo share versions of the same engine.

In this case, we’re talking about Ferrari’s award-winning F154 engine, found in the likes of the Ferrari F8 and SF90, the Maserati Levante and Quattroporte, as well as - you guessed it, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Dissecting The Giulia Quadrifoglio’s Engine

While most versions of Ferrari’s F154 engine are V8s, the variant used in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is actually a V6. It comes in the form of a 2.9-liter twin-turbo, with one of its most distinctive features being a 90-degree angle between the cylinder banks. The lightweight block features fully-aluminum construction, and each cylinder has 4 dedicated valves courtesy of a nitrite-steel dual-overhead-camshaft with continuously variable valve timing.

Alfa Romeo also makes a few of its own modifications to the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s engine, starting with single-scroll turbochargers instead of the dual-scroll turbos found in most F154s. This makes it one of the fastest production 4-door sedans currently available, and it achieved a 7:32 lap time around the Nürburgring.

It features double-wishbone front suspension and multilink vertical rod suspension in the rear, with active dampening that changes based on the selected drive mode.
