The merging of old and new technologies has never been better for automotive enthusiasts, and the car offered here represents a stellar opportunity to combine the ultimate and final aerodynamic release of the NASCAR wars—Plymouth’s legendary 1970 Superbird—with modern driveline and suspension pieces, including a supercharged third-generation Hemi engine. The process began with a factory 1970 Satellite that, after a rotisserie restoration, added the parts that made the Superbird so unique: the front nose cone and chin spoiler, front fender air extractor scoops, A-pillar chrome trim and the towering rear air foil.

But to build this as a modern Hemi Superbird, the engine chosen was a 6.2L/707 HP Hemi V-8 that came from a 2016 SRT Hellcat. This engine, with its low-profile factory blower, fits under the hood in a compact manner, while the battery has been moved to make room for the air intake. It is fed by a fuel pump rated to 1,000 HP. Behind this is a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission and an 8.75-inch differential. Upgrades continued with major suspension changes, including an RMS front F-frame with rack-and-pinion steering, the RMS 4-link in the rear and a set of 4-wheel Wilwood disc brakes using 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers.

This car has been painted in yellow and features the Road Runner graphics on the wing, rear panel and headlamp cover blackout area. Inside, the layout is far from the Road Runner’s standard low-budget fare, as there are now side-support bucket seats, a Pistol Grip shifter with boot mount, custom carbon-fiber dash facing completed by updated gauges, Vintage Air, a custom Mopar steering wheel and Coach Controls wiring with an alarm system. The finished accent on this build is a set of multispoke modern wheels with polished edging and modern narrow-profile tires. The Superbird was one of the ultimate expressions of the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” era of American racing. This beautiful tribute to that era is more than skin-deep, as its 21st century technology is evident throughout.

Is there any better combination of historic design with modern performance?
