2010 AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge

Post by BlueDjinn »

For anyone that's interested; in the February 2011 issue of Popular Hot Rodding; the winner and
pecking order of the 2010 AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge:

The winner is B.E.S. Racing Engines, Chrysler HEMI (Third-Gen)

From the text; "Here, reputations and posturing count for nothing-the power numbers do all the talking."

From Johnny Hunkins' editorial; "Spoiler warning: A fuel injected engine completely stole the show at the 2010
AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge-and by a wide margin. Not only that , the winning engine was a late-model
and a Chrysler HEMI to boot."

Article runs from pages 36 to 56. "Out of 38 competitors and alternates who showed up, nine of them were unable
to make three back-to-back dyno pulls in competition." The article shows dyno sheets for 29 engines.

The illustrated HEMI is 417 cubic inches. It's undersquare at 3.950 x 4.250 bore and stroke.
11.3:1 compression.
700 horsepower @ 6500 rpm. 621 ft/lbs torque @ 5200 rpm.
Top horsepower of the meet. Nice.

I found the undersquare interesting as it reminds me of the 225 Chrysler slant six at 3.40 x 4.12 bore and stroke.
And the 455 Oldsmobile at 4.125 x 4.250. Seems to me the tendancy is towards large bore short stroke engines
with the opposite being the exception. Looks like conventional wisdom takes a back seat to the results; the numbers
don't lie. Anyone that remembers the slant six knows that it was a monster in the right hands. It shut down a lot of eights.
Someone's been paying attention.

Stepped tube headers. That collector really necks down too. Interesting.
