55 270
Basic info 55 270 Dodge Came in 2bl (183 HP)& 4bl (193HP)versions 7.6 comp ratio for both. To get higher comp. ratio you gotta get forged custom pistons. Any Chr. hemi trany adaptor will fit. Limited info in Tex Smiths Hemi Book from Hot Rod Library
I've got one...
Drop me an e-mail, dsingsaas@hotmail.com
Mine's in a zillion pieces right now, I'm going through a rebuild right now. A very EXPENSIVE rebuild. I've found a few sources for parts if I can help you out at all, just holler! (No internet at home, so I can only reply when I'm at work!)

1955 Dodge Royal Lancer w/270 Hemi
I have a 1955 270 Hemi and would like to know the same thing? I'm also trying to figure out "Polyheaded block"? My car runs great but I'm looking to rebuild it and ad some power over what came stock. I'm told I can get one hp per cubic inch with that motor from Hot Hemi Heads! Where else can I look for parts to build this motor and I would like to get an offenhauser 3x2 intake and three new Stromberg 97s to feed the Hemi.
270 hemi
The polisphere, known as "polys", was an economy move by Chrysler. used the hemi block & wedge chamber canted valve heads w/ single instead of dual rocker shafts. Chr. polys used Chr. blocks & Dodge,Desoto & Plymouth(ply 241,259 & 270 only) used Dodge blocks. They can be converted to hemi. This doesn't include 56 & up Ply, & later Dodge non hemi displacment polys. Offenhauser makes a 3X2 intake pt#3372 listed in mt ' 02 P.A.W. catalog. To get higher that stock comp. ratio you'll need custom forged pistons. Tranny adaptors for 54-58 Chr. will fit.

George,
Hey thanks man for the info. I have been to the PAW site but thought that their catalogs were for only 331 Hemi's and larger? This might be a long shot but what do you know about doing a suspension upgrade to my Dodge? I'm looking at something with either coil overs or struts with four wheel disk brakes and would like to go with a late 70's 727 trans? Is this possible? Thanks.

In this case I ment the standard big P.A.W. catalog. There is a carb guy linked to the hotheads site that has rebuilt carbs, linkage, ect. As I said get a Chr. to Mopar A/T adaptor.The Short tail Chr.,Dodge & Desotos all have the same bell pattern. It'l fit the S/B 727. You'll get better performance & gas milage. I got mine from Ron Ganster (229)599-0062. Tranny came out of a late 70s pick up.You might have to buy an aftermarket floor shifter. Disc brakes check Fat Man Fabrications or see if a Volare or Cordoba, ect. sub frame would fit, get a modern front end!

George,
Hey thank you very much for the info. I have a buddy that owns a wrecking yard I can get the trans from and he does have a Cordoba and a Valare out there as well. I was digging through the mess of parts and found an extra hood for my Dodge. Fat Man said to to measure the inside of the frame and they might have something in the way of a front clip if I don't come up with something through the yard. You have been a lot of help. I'm trying to get this done before summer to take out for cruising. Any ideas as for a right front fender? I have searched high and low and out here in Seattle you just don't find that much in the way of old Mopar stuff.

I just named those off the "usual suspects" list. The Volare is popular because you can easily adjust ride hight,then take it to alignment shop. You need to measure track width, center of tire to center of tire, besides frame width. Check Hemmings, there are a number of junkyards listed out west that have rust free sheet metal. There is a site on mopar webring where a guy is putting a new hemi in a 55 Dodge. See if/what he might have done to front end.

Go Parts for 55 Red Ram
Hey ! You got some good info. posts there. Here is some more.
I have a 55 270. Sent the brand new, yes, brand new Cam to Hot Heads & had a 3/4 grind put on it. Got an Offenhauser 3 duece intake from Vintage Parts or Vintage Speed.
You want a Stromberg 48 to run on the center port of intake, has a little more cfm flow than the 97's, if your'e going to run progressive linkage.
I went with a Hot Heads adapter & 67 727-A Torqueflite short shaft tranny & 2,500 R stall converter.
Don't have much space for drive shaft in my 30 A Roadster.
You can get a 97 or 48 from Warren Todd at- toytime@goldruch.com
Maybe one of you other Bad To The Bone early Hemi guys can answer my question ?
I want to get my "LIL" Red Ram comp. ratio up to 9.5 or 9.75 to 1.
If I do it by milling the heads, why can't shimming the rocker arm stanchions work for correct lifter pre-load ? Know where I can get dome pistons, but that's the spendy route.

You could use adj. push rods,I'd go w/ custom forged pistons to get the comp. up.

270 Dodge Hemi
Your right George, just looking for the cheap route for my Street (only) 30 A Roadster. An old lifetime Hemi guy told me on the phone last night that cast Dome pistons would do what I want. Going to call Rocker Arm Specialists to day for some more info.
Thanks;

As far as I know only the OEM 7.6 C/R are available in cast pistons. If you find some higher a lot of people would probably want to know.

OEM Cast Pistons
George;
Motor already has .030" over flat tops in it. Was wanting to get it up to 8.5 or 9 to 1 max. Was told by tel-conn with Chuck Taylor that there are some cheaper cast dome pistons out there. Need to find them.
thanks for reply;

One Cool Ram
You really detailed "Her" out. Bitchen ! Do you take it to Show & Shine meets down there ? Up here in Oregon about the only thing you see under the hoods are Chev-ies! What kind of Tranny are you hooked up to ? Didn't see "Dodge" on lower side of vlv cover. Guess you didn't want to show it.

34 Ford Hemi
That is one Cool Rod. Question ? What exactly is a 34 Aussie ? Never knew the difference.
I bought a 34 5w in Dec. 54 in Long Beach, Calif. when I was in the Navy.
Had a 48 Merc. Duece Strombergs, Winfield cam, clark headers, Offy heads, truck radiator & no fan. Put an H&M duel coil dist. on it & it turned 8 grand. 4" dropped front axle, juice brakes, solid hood sides, 40/48 column shift tranny. Would do almost 70 mph in low gear. Had a blast street racing.
I had my valve covers powder coated "Almost Chrome" color & hand painted the letters Red. Have a pair of plain covers in excellent condition that will sell cheap if anyone wants them.
See that you paint the parts & clean bolt them together same as I do.
Did you use stainless bolts ? I bought a stainless kit off e-bay last year, OK for a non-race engine. There is a kit on e-bay right now, item # 7954849906, in case your interested.

Don, the difference between the australian (aussie) 34 coupe and the usa coupe is here this is a pic of my aussie 34 5w that im building with a 392, notice how the doors are flush with the top of the chassis ,there is a panel called a spear which fits between the body and the running board also how the roof line is taller than the usa body by 30mm , and also cabin area is shorter ie the doors are shorter in lenght , also the aussie coupes are full of wood , , which ive removed and steeled out .
when i put the dodge hemi together i used nickel plated bolts as they were cheaper and looked the same with a polish
