Marine Block

Post by scottm »

Is there any difference between a marine block and
those used in automotive applications? And is there
any difference between reverse and normal rotation
marine blocks? Will the crank, heads, and/or intake
from automotive engines work on a marine block?

Marine engine rotation

The rotation of a marine block is a function of the gear box (v-drive, straignt drive, reduction, etc. Not the motor rotation. The gear box provides the counter rotation.

Marine block- Industrial block- Reverse rotation

Post by IndustrialHemiGuy »

Scott, The Marine/Industrial blocks were made from the same molds as the car blocks, but there was a difference. The difference was the material , the marine/Ind had a 5% nickel content mixed into the cast , which made these blocks extremely wear resistant (providing the air cleaner is present, dirt will wear out anything). I believe these blocks were also physically tougher than the automotive blocks. The reverse rotation motors were different only in the camshaft and distributor drive . A Dodge dealer in Fairbury Nebr used to stand the reverse rotation motors up on the tail end (bellhousing side) and couple a wellshaft to the engine crankshaft thus eliminating the need for a driveshaft or gearhead, they also had to run a dry sump oil pan with a remote oil supply (really unique). The truck motors used an intake manifold with a thermostat in the manifold . I have never seen a ind 56 or 56a with this setup. The 56 ind & 56a ind both used car type manifolds. Dean

If anyone needs a 331 marine block, I have one available, make offer. No heads, or drive gears. But has cam, crank, rods, pistons inside and dual 1 barrel manifold. Removed from boat that burned. Located near Buffalo NY.
