With models like the Pacifica or the 300 sedan, Chrysler isn’t exactly a company worth writing home about these days. But during its long history, the company had a lot of cool cars, like the Newport, the New Yorker, the Imperial, and even the more recent Crossfire. Back in the 1950s and early 1960s, Carrozzeria Ghia helped Chrysler build some of the coolest, best-looking models ever. A trans-Atlantic trio of rare, mid-century Chrysler Ghia show cars will be the highlights of the Scottsdale Auction on January 26, 2023. The three cars are part of the prestigious Ramshead Collection.

1957 Chrysler Ghia Super Dart 400 Concept

The Super Dart 400 concept was built on a 1957 Chrysler 300 C chassis, and in the year of its presentation, it was displayed at both the Torino and New York Motor Shows. More recently it won a class award at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The concept features a striking, futuristic design that inspired numerous vehicles in the coming years. It features exaggerated high-rise fins, an elegant front grille, and a rakish roofline. The design also features chrome side trim that joins the front and the rear bumper, and in the cabin, it has four seats wrapped in fine leather in a combination of black and white with a futuristic dashboard design.

The concept is powered by Chrysler's powerful, dual-carb 392-cubic-inch Power Pack Hemi V-8 engine that delivers a total of 400 horsepower (hence the ‘400’ signature shown in the name). The concept is offered in unrestored, unmodified condition and only has 49,000 miles on the odometer. It is expected to go for anywhere between $750,000 – $950,000.

1962 Chrysler Ghia L6.4

Chrysler unveiled the Ghia L6.4 at the 1962 New York Auto Show, and it was limited to only 26 units, but only 17 of them survived. One of the most famous owners of the Ghia L6.4 was Frank Sinatra, who fell in love with the name after he owned the original 1957/58 Dual Ghia. The car got its name from the size of the Chrysler 383 engine that powered this beautiful Ghia. The engine delivers a total of 335 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.

The car offered for auction has only 33,000 miles recorded, and it is estimated to sell for $450,000 – $650,000.

1954 Chrysler Ghia GS-1 Coupé

Chrysler has design issues the late 1940s and early 1950s, so it asked Carrozzeria Ghia to help build a series of cars inspired by the designs of Virgil Exner, the guy that created the marquee's "forward look." The Ghia GS-1 Coupé was built in nine units, five of which are still alive. It was built on a New Yorker platform and was offered with a Chrysler Hemi 331 cubic-inch V-8 engine coupled to a Powerflite transmission. The model was three times class winner at Pebble Beach, and it is expected to go under the hammer for around $600,000 – $800,000.

The three cars are part of the Ramshead Collection that includes 13 cars owned by the late John White of California. Next to the three Ghia cars, the Scottsdale Auction will also include cars like a 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible, a one-off 1948 Dodge D24 Custom Coupé, and a 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible.
I had no idea these cars existed. The Ghia GS-1 is a pretty sharp car!
