This 1970 Plymouth Superbird is said to have been crashed in a race in the 1970s, and it was reconstructed with parts sourced from a Road Runner during a three-year refurbishment that concluded in 2009. Powered by a fuel-injected 528ci Hemi V8 paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the car has been refinished in orange with a black vinyl roof. Other equipment includes a limited-slip rear differential, front coilover suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, gold-colored 15″ wheels, and air conditioning. The black interior has been fitted with a roll bar, a center console, a Kenwood CD player, and three-point seatbelts. Acquired by the seller in 2019, this modified Superbird is now offered with NASCAR memorabilia and a Michigan title in the seller’s name.

Based on Plymouth’s mid-size Road Runner model, the 1970-only Superbird was redesigned for NASCAR competition, which required Chrysler to produce approximately 2,000 examples for homologation. This car reportedly was T-boned in a race in the 1970s, and during the aforementioned 2000s refurbishment it is said to have been partially rebodied using the driver-side door and midsection floor from a donor Road Runner. Features include an aerodynamic nose cone, fender vents, a tall rear wing, and special decals. According to the pictured fender tag, this car was delivered new in Vitamin C Orange (EK2) with a black vinyl top (V19), and the seller states that it was refinished during the refurbishment.

Gold-finished 15″ Aero Race Wheels are mounted with 235/60 Cooper Cobra Radial GT white-letter tires. Modifications include Wilwood brake calipers front and rear, cross-drilled front rotors, rack-and-pinion steering, front coilovers, and rear traction bars.

The interior features high-back bucket seats with black upholstery and contrasting piping, and an orange roll bar has been fitted in lieu of the rear seats. Plymouth-branded floor mats cover the black carpeting, and a woodgrain console runs the length of the transmission tunnel. The shifter uses a pistol-grip-style handle, and air conditioning, a Kenwood CD player, and three-point seatbelts have been added. The battery is mounted in the trunk.

A steering wheel with a “Beep! Beep!” Road Runner center frames instrumentation that includes a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline and inset analog clock, a custom 240-mph speedometer, and four auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 29k miles, approximately 50 of which have been added by the seller; true chassis mileage is unknown.

The 528ci V8 is said to have been purchased as a crate engine from Indy Cylinder Head and utilizes fuel injection, Hemi cylinder heads, a roller camshaft, and billet accessory pulleys with a serpentine-belt system. A dual exhaust system with a crossover is utilized along with a stainless-steel fuel cell.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Keisler five-speed manual transmission and a Dana 60 rear axle with a 3.54:1 final-drive ratio and a limited-slip differential. Some of the underbody photos were taken under previous ownership.

A photo of the reproduction VIN sticker on the door is provided above. The car’s chassis number indicates that it began life as a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner–based hardtop equipped with a 426ci Hemi V8 engine. The chassis number near the windshield base is also shown in the gallery.

The pictured fender tag indicates that the car was built with an R-code 426 Hemi engine (112, E74) and a four-speed manual transmission (676, D21) and that it featured Superbird-specific characteristics such as a black vinyl roof covering (V19), deletion of transverse stripes (V88), and a November 30 scheduled production date (B30).

A Dakota-style hat and NASCAR memorabilia will accompany the vehicle. A signboard created when the car was sold by a prior owner in 2010 is viewable in the gallery.

The Michigan title describes the car as a 1970 Plymouth roadster; a photo of the title is provided in the gallery.

The purists may not be happy, but a 5-Speed 528 HEMI Superbird is awesome!
