5.7 HEMI crate engine error codes

Post by HEMIDakotaTX »

In 2005 a friend of mine that owned a Dodge dealership in Oklahoma had a 5.7 HEMI MPI crate engine that the owner never picked up. I had him install it in my 2001 AWD Dakota SLT. It has been awsome! Does anyone know where you read the computer on a crate engine harness? Something is wrong and it shuts down the engine. All I have to do is turn the key off and then restart the engine and everything works great till the next time it shuts down. My friend is out of business now (Chrysler decision??? this was a 4 star dealership) and I cannot find a dealership in Abilene that will even talk to me.

i would think that they would have used the same location as your original engine. driver side under the dash.
dakota-durango.com might be a better place to ask. many hemi dakota conversons there.

Interesting. Does a late model crate HEMI engine not use an OBD-II computer?

The HEMI crate engine comes with its own computer just for the engine. The existing computer is still needed to handle the other functions on the truck. One of the problems they were having was the 2001 technology was different than the 2005 used for the crate engine. The Dakota was changed in 2004 and if mine had been a 2004 it would have worked directly with the crate engine. As it was they had to take sensors off the 4.7 and put them on the 5.7 so they would be compatable. The crate harness is self contained and does not have anything to do with anything else on the truck. That is where my problem lies. I can plug in under the dash and see everything but the engine. I need to know where you get the information off the crate engine computer.

5.7L HEMI CONVERSION PACKAGES
- NGC engine controller with unique calibration

Is that the engine controller your truck is using?
Is it really a black box with not port to plugin to?

IGNITION AND ELECTRONICS
Programmable EMS
Non-Programmable EMS (Not Shown)

I'm not sure how this relates to the NGC controller.
Is it a replacement? Or does it work with the NGC?

Man, I need to learn more about these new crate engines.
Programmable or not, I would assume there should be a way
to read codes, view alarms, etc from the engine's sensors.

I pinged a couple of sources and received this response so far...
If it is using the Mopar/AEM controller [Dodge Motorsports] developed as part of the program, all available diagnostic and tuning features are accessible using a laptop, serial cable and the AEM Pro software (available free @ AEMPOWER.com). Understand that this controller does not supply DTC's. The operator will have to look at stored data and run conditions to determine possible trouble areas and that means a good bit more engine & tuning knowledge. Also Fast and Diablo have tools to help sort this out as well.
You said your computer is p/n P4510342. The above doesn't tell me
if your computer is Mopar/AEM or not. I'm trying to figure that out.

Although I found it interesting that the computer won't include DTCs.
I suppose this means that hopefully there's a way to data log and then
you would need to watch the data to see what it's doing wrong. Fun.

I received a further updated based on our ECM p/n...
That would be the old 5.7L crate engine controller which is indeed a NGC controller. I think it can be scanned to limited degree with a DRB-III but I don't believe there are any live DTC's. Short answer IMHO, is "you're screwed."
So I guess it's not looking good for troubleshooting. :(

I have been told the same thing by the Dodge dealership. They want to replace my P4510356 engine wiring harness with a P5155529AB engine wiring harness and then it will except a P5153528 programmable engine controller which will give me error codes when something happens. The hard part to swallow is the $3,300 plus labor to do it and we haven't fixed the original problem yet!

Wow, approx $2500 for the ECU. That's not pocket change! (Well, not for me.)

$2,500 plus $800 for the harness. What other choice do I have?

Scott, Mopar Performance sent me a replacement EMS unit to see if that solved the problem. It did not! Do you know where I can get a list of the sensors that are on a crate engine and which sensor might be causing this problem?
