The heart of any racing car is it's engine and the Charger Funny Car starts with an 8.1-liter V-8 generating 11,000 hp and 8,000 lb.-ft of torque.

A ... Funny ... Car. While the name might seem altogether superficial - they are rather odd looking beasts after all - it actually refers to a specific class of vehicles designed to race in the quarter mile. They are commonly identified as having a custom tubular chassis, supercharged V-8 under 500 cubic inches running on nitromethane - what else?! - and the ability to scoot down the track in under 4 seconds at well over 300 mph.

The new Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat has inspired a similarly new - but altogether different in every conceivable way - 11,000 hp Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Funny Car. It's already been running for about a year now and offers an excellent opportunity to see what a funny car is and how it does what it does. Let's take a look.

Ever since the early days of Funny Car racing, they've emulated road cars, if not in chassis and engine fundamentals, at least in looks. Current Funny Cars such as the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat start with a hand fabricated spaceframe chassis made of chrome moly steel. The suspension and rear end are bolted securely to the 125" frame with an integral roll cage. Where early cars were based on acid dipped bodies, this gave way to hand formed fiberglass units and now they are made exclusively of carbon fiber both for excellent downforce and durability. The aero on these things is essential to balancing both road holding ability and maximum time and speed.

The heart and soul of any racing car is it's engine and the Dodge Charger Funny Car starts with an 8.1-liter V-8 generating 11,000 hp and 8,000 lb.-ft. of torque. The architecture and size of the engine is dictated by NHRA rules. As for the power output, I suppose the sky is the limit but it's hard to really gauge these things as there are no dynos capable of measuring the gargantuan output. Based on the 426 Hemi it revs to 8,500 rpm. The block and heads are made of solid aluminum billets so there's no coolant. But with runs as short as they are overheating isn't a problem. Sitting atop the motor is a 14-71 supercharger that blows 548 cubic inches of air per turn of the screw - that's more displacement than the motor itself! It's an overdriven unit that runs at about 55 psi.

Launching the car is akin to being shot out of the barrel of a gun. Upon release of the clutch - oh yeah, there is no transmission! - the super sticky tires dig and you go like stink hitting approximately 6.5g's of acceleration. By the end of the quarter mile, if you've done everything right, you'll be rewarded with a time in the high 3's at about 320 mph. Is that fast enough for you? Buckle up.
Re-read those numbers again on the motor -- these things are absolutely insane!
