Hemi camwalk fix.

Post by Goran »

Camwalk is wellknown when having a roller cam. Here is one way of fixing it.
Image
I used a standard roller timing drive from Comp Cam:s, and machined all surfaces.
An aluminium bearing centre was fabricated.

Here in its possition with the cam bolts in place.

The bearing layer consists of 3 parts, two outer steel shims and roller tray in the middle.
Image
There is an identical bearing on the other side of the gear drive.
Image
On the inside of the cam cower there is an bearing thrust plate mounted. I am using zero end play.

This is the inside of the camgear and the centre portion is turned down to meet the outer bearing shim at exact distance for the two camger to line up.

Very slick and nice work! The only thing I might suggest you
also dois, when you bolt the water pump on, to wedge a nut,
or a piece of bar stock cut to the appropriate length, between
the the back of the water pump and the outside surface of
the timing cover to reinforce the cover. Even with your thrust
bearing, I think the stock stamped cover can still flex and
allow some unwanted forward cam movement. A nut or
some bar stock wedged between the pump and the cover
will absolutely ensure that things stay put.

Mart.
I've actually already done what you say.
Since I have the engine in a Pantera, it's cramped for space for water pump, so I use a card chevy pump. I replaced the back of the pump, which is of thin sheet metal in favour for one of 4mm aluminum that is just touching the cam cover (with the right gasket against the block).

Kind regards
