Warranty 426 Block ID?

Post by scottm »

How does someone determine if a 426 Hemi car
has an original block or maybe a warranty block?
I believe warranty 426 blocks may or may not be
stamped with the VIN from the car. Either way,
I am curious how you ID the warranty 426 blocks.

I am told the pad where the VIN is stamped should
be 5/32 inch from the block. If someone removed
the VIN, it would be about 1/8 inch less than that.
This pad should have "swirl marks" that were made
during the machining process. If the pad is shiny
or smooth, it may have been "re-machined".

Special thanks to Aloha Dream Cars for this info.

Scott, i am not 100% sure but i was thinking that the vin # on the pan rail didn't start till 1969.
i know that the other big block engines are like that .

Warranty blocks do not have V.I.N.s on them. They USUALLY had a plate rivited to the side of the block with warranty info.
Auto manufacturers did not begin placing the V.I.N. on engines and transmissions until mandated by the government for the 1968 model year.
Hemi engines had the displacment and assembly dates (sometimes the assembly date is absent) located on the pad in front of the intake manifold until the 1968 block castings (there were no Hemis cast in 1967 as they had so many left over 66 blocks) in 1968 through 1971 they were stamping with the ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER on the oil pan flange with coded information that indicated the engine manufacturing plant, C.I.D., build date and engine build sequence.
