Snorkin’ the Cat: SRT Teases New Challenger Hellcat Hood

Yeah, Chevrolet had the Cowl Induction hood, Buick installed those cool mesh intakes on the early ’70s GS models, Pontiac had Ram Air, and Ford offered a Boss shaker on the Mach 1, but nobody amassed a collection of sweet muscle-era hood scoops quite like Ma Mopar. Mentioning Air Grabber, Shaker, and the Hemi Dart’s gaping maw merely nibbles at the smorgasbord of scoopage offered by the Chrysler Corporation in the 1960s and ’70s. Over the past decade or so, Chrysler has mined this heritage to great effect, and with the library far from exhausted, the designers at SRT figured they’d dip back into the past for the Challenger Hellcat’s latest bonnet.

The snorkel hood was perhaps most famously deployed on the 1970 Dodge Super Bee, arguably the flat-out meanest-looking street car Chrysler turned out in an era that thrived on a strangely whimsical brand of psychedelic aggro. By now, you’ve guessed that the snorkel hood is back in action for 2019, sitting atop SRT’s supercharged 6.2-liter V-8.

The Challenger Hellcat’s previous hood drew inspiration from the unit on the ’70 Plymouth ’Cuda AAR, a one-year-only, 340-cubic-inch V-8–powered model that drew inspiration from Dan Gurney’s Trans-Am program. Aside from the two images provided, FCA has offered up nothing more on the new hood, promising that additional info will arrive during the summer. Might the teaser pics presage a power bump for the Challenger Hellcat? After all, Ford has a GT500 on the way that will likely best the Hellcat’s 707 horsepower; the Camaro ZL1 1LE proved its mettle during last year’s Lightning Lap, finishing second to the much more expensive Mercedes-AMG GT R; and the dragstrip-hero Demon was a one-year-only proposition. This new hood seems likely to be a portal to fresh new levels of ridiculousness.
Now all we need is the 426 HEMI under that hood.
