DohChrysler has announced that it is voluntarily recalling 4,459 V6-powered Dodge Challengers in order to fix a short-circuit that can cause a wiring harness to overheat and catch fire. About 1,900 of the affected vehicles are parked on dealer lots while the rest are already in customer hands.
The recall applies to Challengers equipped with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and built between November 29th, 2012, and January 24th, 2013. Chrysler is notifying owners of affected vehicles by phone and by mail and urging them not to drive their car and not to park it inside or near a garage until it is fixed. Challenger owners who are not sure whether or not their car is covered by the recall are asked to check with their local dealer.
Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne said in a statement that a shipment of faulty electrical parts arrived at the Brampton, Ontario, factory several months ago. One of the components caught fire as workers tried to fix it so Chrysler chose to issue a recall.
Seven Challengers have caught fire over the past few months but no injuries have been reported.
Dodge dealers will fix the short-circuit free of charge and provide a loaner car for the entire time that the vehicle is in the shop.
