anybody knows?
If you are talking about installed in production cars then I have an article from a 1980 Popular Hot Rodding magazine that states 8921 were built. Information in the Mopar Performance Chassis manual 9th edition published in 2000 by Chrysler Corporation shows 9184 street hemi cars shipped between 1965 and 1971, this does not include the race hemi cars that were built. It also states that many different numbers have been quoted by so called "experts" but their records are from the Chrysler Historical Foundation. I would guess that the production is less than 10,000 for engines installed and sold in cars from the factory.

Hemi numbers
Just got my copy of Larry Shepard's new book, "How to rebuild and modify Chrysler 426 Hemi engines", and in there he states the total number of 426 Hemi engines made (installed in production cars) as 10,669.
This doesn't include any extra blocks cast for warranty replacement, Mopar's own projects, factory racing teams, over the counter sales, publicity give-aways, etc. There is a year-on-year breakdown included in the book.
As an addendum, the book is really good ! A very detailed, logically laid out and concise publication, with a slant to gas fuelled motors, but with some additional info on SS/S, Pro-Stock and Top Fuel in places.
Highly recommended !
