Willys Tornado 230 an early OHC Hemi?

Post by scottm »

Willys Tornado 230 CI Engine Info / History
http://www.ifsja.org/tech/motors/tornado.shtml
... a single overhead cam layout was adopted with hemispheric combustion chambers ...
Anyone know anything about this? SOHC Hemi?
Unfortunately it's the first time that I heard of it.

No habla, but: scroll down the page for a head-on cutaway. Super long stroke and tall head make for a very tall engine. We had one when I was a kid.

About a million motorcycles use a similar sohc hemi setup, both 2 and 4 valve.

Yep--the Willys OHC 6 was definitely a hemi. They were novel and ahead of their time, but never really worked to their full potential due to their small bore and relatively long stroke.

Jeep Engine: Tornado 230 I6

Here is a little more information. Some actual specs.
Still wish that I could see some pics of the chambers!
210 ft-lb @ 1750 rpm is pretty good for a 3.7L engine.
