We Hear: The SRT8s Are Coming

Sources at Chrysler have confirmed to Motor Trend what everyone already suspected: new SRT-8 models are on the way.

All our sources would confirm, though, is that SRT8s, plural, are coming. While they wouldn't specify which models exactly, it isn't hard to put the pieces together. Both the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Charger were spotted months ago testing in SRT8 guise, so those two are a sure bet. Will there be another Chrysler 300 SRT8? That one we haven't heard about yet, but we wouldn't bet against it.

Our sources likewise wouldn't get into details, but again, they aren't hard to infer. Using the last-gen SRT8s as a template, as well as spy shots and info we've gleaned recently, Chrysler's new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 is sure to be found under the hoods of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 and Charger SRT8. Under the hood of the new Challenger SRT8, the new Hemi pumps out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, and we don't expect those stats to change significantly for the other models.

Like the last-gen SRT8s, we also expect the new models to carry heavy-duty brakes, firmer suspension and racier bodywork. We hope they'll be paired with Chrysler's new eight-speed automatic rather than the old five-speed, but that will depend on when the vehicles launch. We also know that Dodge has worked up some prototype paddle shifters, which we saw on the Charger Redline SEMA show car, and we're hoping those will make it to production as well.

When will we see these new pavement pulverizers? With the new models already on the road and SRT8 prototypes spotted testing four months ago, we'd bet the production models will bow by the end of 2011 as 2012 models.
I kind of wish they would make a Ram SRT8. Maybe it's just me?
