I have only seen 1 person really mention mileage numbers.
12 mixed and 14 highway in a 6100-lb 4x4 4.10 QC 2500.

I just bought a Ram 1500 shortbed 2WD with the 5.7. After 288 miles it shows an average of 14.7 mpg. I live in a rural area near a small town, so most of the driving is highway. I'd guess about 11 or 12 in town. Of course, with low miles I haven't pushed it yet. Mileage will surely drop to 13 or so when I punch it.

I imagine mileage will get better as it breaks in, too.

MPG with a sub-7000 lbs Hemi truck

Post by redelk »

I have an 2500 4x4 longbed with a 5 speed and a 3.73 limited slip rear end. It also has a K&N filter and a single FlowMaster 70.

With the OEM BFG 265/70 tires, I got about 11 mpg in town and about 13 during the very limited highway driving I did. Now, with the 35x12.50 BFG tires, it pretty close to the same, after figuring in the ratio/speedo difference. I'd rather gone with a tad smaller tire, like a LT305/70, but Bridgestone doesn't make one yet in the Dueler line (my personal choice). If I had know I was getting something as big as the 35x12.50 tires, I'd have ordered the truck with the 4.10 rear end.

The 3.73 is now more like a 3.42 because of the tire size change. If I had the 4.10, it would have been a lot closer to the 3.73 after the tire swap. Fifth gear was kinda tall to start with and now it's all but useless on anything but 75+ mph and flat roads. It's a toss up if forth or fifth is the best gear at sub 70 mph on hilly highways. Still, with first gear being lower geared then reverse, it has no problem launching off the light (rev limiter comes up fast) and will still bark those 35's in the first three gears.

With 2800 miles on the odo and not making any major road trips with or without a trailer, it's really too early to tell conclusively. For now, it's almost acts as if it doesn't care if it's in town or on the interstate (off road cuts about 2~3 mpg in 4WD), as well as if it has a 2,500+ lb loaded, enclosed motorcycle trailer behind it or not. 11~13 mpg seems to be about the average for me.

I understand the 5.7L is 10% more efficient than the
5.9L but that the truck now has worse aerodynamics.
(And thus the improved fuel economy is not noticed.)

They (Chrysler) will have to post an EPA fuel rating for the 1500 HEMI. If anyone sees it, please post it. Chrsyler does not have to post for the 2500 and 3500.

My RAM 2500HD 4X4 shortbox by my driving is getting 10-11 MPH. But my mother (lighter foot) got 14 MPH. This is still poor.

By friend is three weeks away from a 1500 Hemi. I am waiting to see his mileage.

I have 1500 miles on my 5.7 hemi and I can get over for 14 mpg until I hit a traffic signal or if I have to stop because of backups, then it drops to 9 - 11 mpg just like that. Seems to consume more gas idling than driving.

I have a 2003 quad cab with the 5.7l hemi with about 1200 miles. So far I have been getting avg. 16.5 miles per gallon on the highway but have been able to get a little over 18 on a two hundred mile trip. In town I average around 10 or even less. It is a little town with a lot of stop and go traffic.

I have 2500 miles on my truck and i can not get better than 11.5MPG. I live in orange county california and my driving is all city and all traffic. If i run 87(which i do often$$$) octane gas i can get 10 to 11.5mpg but if i run 89 i will get 11.5 to 12.5mpg.I know this sounds weird but its true.I WISH I COULD GET BETTER GAS MILEAGE!!!!!

I am only getting about 11 mpg. Odo currently at 400. Hoping this will go up. Is 87 octane good enough or should I consider running 89 or 91. Will this increase mileage?

87 octane will work, but the computer limits the power of the engine, it checks every couple of tanks to see if you have gone back to the higher grade of gas. So if you switch from tank to tank, you will not get the performance you would if you maintained 89 or 91.

Has anyone tried any aftermarket air intake systems to improve their mileage? The only ones I was able to find were Volant, Airmax & Airaid. Any suggestions on which one is better?

Mileage

Post by mac44 »

I now have 2500 miles on my QC 4dr with 3.92/20's. I was pretty dismayed with the 11.5 to 12 I was getting in mixed driving, but that was at 70-75 when on the highway and driving pretty aggressively in town, on 89 octane the whole time, truck stock.

I had one completely highway trip that was ~3hours long, set cruise at 70, had 2 adults, 3 kids, and the bed full of stuff, and got 15.5 mpg.

Lately, I have been driving like normal in town, but babying it on the highway (~60mph), and my mileage is at 15.2 on the computer, have not calculated it out yet, but will when I finish the tank. Seems like the trip computer is .5 - 1 mpg low.

Has anyone seen a difference with a tonneau cover? I wouldn't mind putting a soft one on if it would help. Does anyone have a brand/model they recommend?

Thanks, Mac

Install the Denso Iridium power plugs (IK-16) and you'll pick up about 1 mile extra per gallon. See my post.

I've put most of 9000 miles on since I bought the truck in July. Nearly all of my driving is on the highway. I get about 14.5 mpg.

In September, I drove 3100 miles to Vegas and back, through the New Mexico and Arizona deserts and mountains. I averaged 15.53 mpg, with a best leg of 18.41 (Williams AZ to Grand Canyon and back) and a worst leg of 13.83 (Albuquerque back to Amarillo). Yes, I'm a geek and took notes of that crap!

I put Mobil 1 10-30 in at about 500 miles and have changed it twice since. I use only 89 octane (though I had to put up with 88 a time or two on the trip) and I have a K&N air filter. Otherwise, the truck is completely stock.

Gas mileage

Bought a 2004 1500 2wd Quad cab. Drove it to TX from KC. Got 13.9 on the way down 15.6 on the way back. Cruise was set at 76mph both ways. So far city driving has averaged 14.9. I keep my foot out of it as much as I can. Gotta show off now and again[/b]
