help decoding Hemi

Post by jason12872 »

A friend recently gave me a Hemi for a Model A Coupe I'm building ,I can't find any of the casting numbers on any of the charts. The numbers on lifter valley are VT 348 1621 the heads have 1536367-1. The only thing I can find is that it's a truck motor. Thanks

A 'VT348' is a '56 Dodge 270 inch hemi
medium duty truck engine. If you're
looking for other parts for it - ie - intake
manifolds, etc, the 270 is a low-deck
engine, similar to the 241.

Actually it's a '54 331 truck engine, both code & head numbers.

*CORRECTION* - IT IS A 331!

I stand corrected. It is a 331. The bad information I posted
came from a now obviously erroneous chart posted on
the H.A.M.B. (See http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/show ... &showall=1 and
scroll down to post #26). The chart, at least in regards to
the VT348 listing is, in hindsight, obviously wrong - and since
then, I've found numerous other information listings from
known reputable sources that show the VT348 as a 331.
Sorry for the confusion and misinformation.
