Chrysler hemi marine -year and displacement???

Post by murmrk »

I am looking at a couple of chrysler marine Hemi engines with the trannys attached . The owner has no idea of the year or displacement. any help would be greatly appreciated!! Here is what i have so far.....
Model # 45 p0404
Serial # 61370

And are they really worth anything... Assuming they are in good running condition? cosmetically they look pretty good.
Thanks in advance!!!

If they have 2 1 bbl carbs they are 331s, if 1 or 2 4bbl 354s. If they have 1:1 transmissions they are worth good money, if not just spare parts.

If they both came out of the same boat they do not have 1:1 trans.

331's with same block as industrial or truck engines. Good blocks. Most people just pull the rockerarms and valve covers and run...

M45S 331 2X1
M45S3 354 2X1
M45SP 331 2X4
M45SP-3 2X4
One of those maybe counter rotating engine. They both reportedly have different firing order than the other Hemis LH 1-8-7-2-4-3-6-5 RH 1-5-6-3-4-2-7-8

Hey George, Chrysler labled the cylinders on the marine engines from the rear, firing orders are the same if you renumber the cylinder numbers from the front.

They also offered the 2X4 331 but don't think they ever sold any. Every 331 I have ever seen was light greenish color. So anytime you see 2X4 it is a 354 and Royal blue in color, they also had a real goofy single 4 bbl manifold with a big wedge spacer on 354 M45SP, also Royal blue, mostly in the "Imperial" engine series delivered to Canada.

The "Big Purple" engine was the 354 2X4 SP3. Everyone of those had real good A1 blocks.

There were tons of the 354 engines in tugs and crusiers both 331 and 354s. All had transmissions with a ratio that turned the props more then the engine speed to turn big props.

Those transmissions have never been able to be converted to 1:1 because of the nature and strength of the rear plate, that needs replacing to do it, without having the parts from a spare 1:1.

Next time you are in the neighborhood stop by and take a look at the tub, it is just about finished. You can have all the 392 alum bels and spacers from the piles if you want them also. There are 3-4 of them just laying around.

I was in Maryland in June on the Power Tour. Probably won't be up there again anytime soon! I suspected the firing order thing on one of them.

WEll. i took some pictures of the id plate, which apparently the marine engines have and it was identifed by what i feel is a competent hemi enthusiest. he said his books show them as 354's .Thanks for the insight. We are possibly going to ebay them,,, do you think they would bring any serious interest, say over $1,000 each?If not we are going to let them sit. thanks Mark.

"any serious interest, say over $1,000 each" extermely high expectation with those transmissions.

That "p" on your engine plate is probably a well worn R

What color are the engines? Green or Royal blue?

PS: I own Model 45 R 0504 serial number 61114 and 45 L 0504 serial number 62512 both 331s, notice neither one has a suffix. The 0504 is the hull number that of the boat they were installed.

That "p" on your engine plate is probably a well worn R

Model 44 is 270 very rare little Dodge marine hemi engine.
Model 45 is designation for 331, without any following letter designations..
Model 45 SP or SP3R 354s special perfrormance
