Re: Sealing girdle to block

The clamping force, or torque, is no different with studs or bolts. 85 lbs is 85 lbs, correct? The difference is that the force is distributed differently . A bolt relies primarily on the threads in the block and the area under the head of the bolt. ( you are in effect "twisting" the bolt ...

Re: Crazy idea, timing gears

I don't know who or even if, anyone makes a two-gear cam and drive set-up for an early hemi, but "back in day" - about 35 years ago(!) I had I had a reverse ground Isky 550R roller cam and matching Isky two-gear drive set-up in a small bliock Chevy. The cam and ignition timing was rock st...

Re: early 331heads

Why can't you just drill a hole in the head and tap it to the same size pipe thread on the adapter plate? Just curious. Buddy By all means, you can Buddy. Guys have done it that way for 50 years. But personally I would prefer to see the fitting in something a bit more substantial than the 3/16"...

It sounds like your engine is a 1954, not a 55. Do you have the stamped numbers off the block, in front of the valley cover?

intake conversions

As some of you probably know, I have been doing some 2bbl to 4bbl conversions with early hemi stock intakes. Here are a few pictures. 51-54 331 Chrysler http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/qq352/TR_Waters/HPIM2150_640x480.jpg Low Deck Desoto http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/qq352/TR_Waters/HPIM2084...

Re: early 331heads

Thanks guys. Yes, these plates can be mounted to any Chrysler early hemi head which does not already have water outlets. ( I havent fit them to a Desoto head yet) The install is not hard at all. The head pictured had a small area milled, but the same could be done with a small grinder and flat file....

Re: early 331heads

Most aftermarket intakes will have access to water between the first and second intake port on each side. You can plumb from each side to a remote thermostat housing. I have this kit which I designed primarily for use with truck heads. It would also work on the early car heads as well. These mount t...

Re: Stroking the 392?

You need to remember that when using stock rods with a stroked crank that, while moving the rod journal away from the crank centerline will extend the rod out farther on up stroke, it will make the rod "short" on the down stroke. i.e.,piston pin closer to the counterweights, often times wh...

Rocker shaft oiling

It seems that quite often someone rebuilds their hemi and upon start-up, gets no oil to the rockers. I cannot stress enough how important it is when rebuilding rockers that EVERY passage be checked and cleaned of any blockage. Truck / Industrial Heads. Tapping for water

With prices going up, and car heads getting used, many are going to truck or industrial heads. One question always seems to come up. "Where do I drill for water?" The answer has always been somewhat vague. On the ends. Hopefully this will help. This is a cutaway of a Chrysler truck ...

the fix is, bolt the heads on, then wipe a layer of black permatex across the top of that area, from front to back- between head and block- then it won't leak oil there
Actually, thats not a fix. Its an oil leak waiting to happen. But to each their own. Good luck with your build.

I dont believe there is a significant difference in port size. The slight problem with using 270 heads on a 315-325 block is that due to a casting difference, the heads do not quite cover the keyhole shaped pushrod holes in the 315/325 block. You will need to either add some weld or epoxy onto the h...
