392 Hemi maximum safe overbore- cylinder wall thickness
I've seen this topic knocked around from time to time. How much can you bore out a 392 early Hemi Chrysler ? Having invested in a new sonic tester years ago, I can check blocks for myself and see what the cylinder wall thickness really is on various engines. I have checked many 331 and 354 Hemis and...

Re: The HEMI is BOSS and the BOSS is Chrysler
Yes, It's A Hemi. How convenient then; or is that coincidental, that M/T castings do share a few parts with the Chrysler, including the intake rocker arms and valve covers. G agreed, both the M/T Pontiac and M/T Ford FE heads, were based on the early 392 Chrysler, proof being they even used Chrysle...

Re: The HEMI is BOSS and the BOSS is Chrysler
I used to think the same think until someone enlightened me. The hemi cylinder head design was around long before Chrysler built their engines, Zora Arkus Duntov made a hemi conversion for the flathead Ford V8- and during the 1960's Pontiac asked Chrysler for help developing a Pontiac OHC Hemi engin...

Re: What are "555" heads?
Cool,I have a pair of 56' 354 heads,do you know if all the 354 heads for that year fall under the "best flowing" category? '56 is better than '51-'53 heads, and marginally better than '57-'58 heads. If you had the choice and all were easily obtainable, one would choose the '555" for ...

I'm almost certain the later tall deck heads have larger ports, but I have not ever measured them

Re: Daily driver 354 vs 383
Yes, the port volume is only smaller becasue they're short, the openings are larger than average even for some big block engine families. The proof is in the actual checking of the intake port volumes- I've checked many. early 1951-53 Hemi heads had smallish 115 cc intake ports the 1954-55 Hemi hea...

Re: Daily driver 354 vs 383
the ports may look "huge" but they really aren't- the 354 and 392 hemis had 145-150 cc intake ports, the 1954-55 331 hemis had 175 cc intake ports- to give a good comparison, a Pontiac 350 and 350 Chevy small block has 150 cc intake ports unlike the later 426, the early hemis were primaril...

First of all hello,I'm new to the forum and pretty much new to the early hemi scene, anyway, I have been planning my next project and came across making the decision of dropping in my 354 Hemi or 383 into a 71 swb Dodge D100 pick up truck, the goal of the project is for a daily driver with tons of t...

Re: Stroking the 392?
I would not put EAGLE RODS in an early Hemi- Eagle forgings and castings are made in CHINA. I seriously doubt a pump gas early Hemi build would need anything more than the stock Chrysler rod, it will easily handle 500HP and is a quality made in USA forging with high nickel content. Another option is...

Re: Dwell time at TDC
I can relate my personal experience: I've found the major factors with detonation are too much static compression ratio, too much timing, fuel mixture lean, or head gasket stack beyond .080"- all create detonation. the long rod won't be as much a factor, because in making the rod longer, the pi...

the pentroof will have similar flame propagation characteristics to the hemi, with the center spark plug. All the modern commuter engines are pentroof hemis to enable the use of 4 valves per hole- but even those are knock sensitive. I ran a 3.4 DOHC with 9.6 CR factory and it was a 93 octane only en...

Re: 392 hemi vs 426 hemi
The 426H chamber is much larger than the 392's like 170cc to 107's on my 354 ( i cc'ed mine at 99cc's) the 426 can take more adv because the block is much stronger ie skirted and tied as are the rods,The 426 with its bigger bore also lends itself to being able to flow more air as the cylinders are ...

the compression pump tool I"m referring to, is used by the small local dirt and paved circle tracks, perhaps not part of any sanctioning organization like NASCAR or SCTA or NHRA, etc. Often these tools are home-made or custom made by the track owner or tech man, but there are a few available co...

Re: Filled exhaust crossover
The filled x-over will run just fine in hot weather, actually you won't even notice the difference, or the car will run better- the intake will definitely run cooler without the x-over heat. In cold weather the car will take a very long time to run smoothly. Use a block off type intake gasket to com...

Yes, a big paid ad, a few dollars (or just lunch) to the columnist, a few hours porting the heads and manifolds, quick cam swap, rejetting and a few mothballs do wonders for the "stock road test". The actual cars were always slower. This was almost universal back in the day - well into th...

Re: 392 hemi vs 426 hemi
I had read online where Garlits said the 426 would take a lot more advance than the 392 and still make more power, where the 392 would blow up with that much advance. The question is why ? The most apparent reason would be the stroke on the 392 was longer, 3.92" for the 392, vs 3.75" for t...

1955 Chrysler 300B 1/4 e.t./mph from 1955 Hot Rod Magazine
a few years ago I obtained a vintage old 1955 Hot Rod magazine that has an original 1955 Chrysler 300B road test in it. I had forgotten that I had it, but recently going through some stuff found it again. here's the 1/4 mile times: 17.0 flat e.t. at 84 mph- that was 331 hemi , exhaust manifolds, sol...

Clean with etching acid aka wheel etcher acid. Use 440 stock pistons that are aluminum. They work. My 2 cents. D Hunt that must be a typo, right ? because 440 pistons would not every fit or work in an early Hemi, the 440 pistons are way oversize something like a 4.32 bore. you must mean 340 pistons...

I have two sets of 392 heads. 1) completely prepped with extra large intake and exhaust valves and race springs, exhaust crossover filled, tube seals, etc., milled to 97cc chambers. Could get 10.5:1CR with shelf forged pistons but they would need valve reliefs enlarged or get custom forged pistons ...

you are experiencing the foremost challenge of building and owning an early hemi engine- what to put it in. That's why we see so many of these engines running on home made stands on the garage floor, on "youtube". Go into youtube and type in "331 hemi" or "325 dodge hemi&quo...
