Re: Stroker 392 Crankshafts
I think the 392 blocks are being made but they're not being advertised (Gene Adams). Used cranks are on the high side for asking price, if you want a low deck or tall deck stroker then Ohio will make one for just under $1600. Since that's around the same cost as buying a 392 OEM core and modifying i...

Re: Stroker 331-354-392 Crankshafts
I emailed several places including SCAT and Eagle. If any of you want an affordable crank drop a note to service@eaglerod.com and Cranktech@ScatEnterprises.com and let them know there is a potential market for these. I told them I was interested in the low deck, it's up to you.

Re: Stroker 392 Crankshafts
It's getting harder to work on these things every day. Welded strokers have gone up to the price SCAT and Eagle are selling new forged cranks for (for almost every engine but the 331, 354 ro 392 that is) and no one like myself will spend over 2K on a crank. Something's gotta give. I wonder who's gon...

Re: Sodium Filled Exhaust Valves...
my very old service manual states:
if there are any visible cracks in the valve, dig a deep hole in the ground and bury it
no kidding. that was the way they suggested to dispose of it. that's because sodium 'explodes' like a grenade when in contact with water. get rid of them.

Re: Stroker 392 Crankshafts
even the worst early hemi stroker combo has a better ratio than a sbc. if you go with off the shelf 6.8" rods you have a 1.60 ratio and a good skirt on the piston. it's a personal preference of the engine builder. outer limits are probably 6.535 rods on a 4.375" crank in a low deck - not s...

Re: Stroker 392 Crankshafts
There's a local place close to me that markets custom cranks for pretty much anything. If I get brave enough I'll call them and ask just how much a low or high deck crank will cost. If they can sell a batch then then price will definitely be lower.......

Re: 331 "W" Block limits
Another option is to get Venolia custom 331 pistons in any bore size you want, any CR. They're good, way cheaper than Ross etc, they know the old stuff too. Why not try a 3.91" 318 bore with offset ground crank to accept BBC rods? You can get around 360 CID with that combo. An offset ground and...

Re: Desoto First Year Hemi Question
They may use the same tranny but the bellhousing is almost guaranteed to be different. Any short bell hemi housing will directly bolt to the Desoto. Just make sure your tranny will bolt up to it. This will require some trial and error on your end.

Re: HI New Guy Here! Desoto Hemi Question
There have been plenty of 354's and 392's stuffed into early A-bodies so a later one should be a breeze. It may not slide right in but the modifications required are very minor compared to a big block swap and there are thousands of those out there.

Re: What's your street carbueration?
Either one sounds like a good combination to me. The 500's are simpler and sold as a direct bolt-on pair for dual-quad apps but the Holley's have a meaner look to them and aren't too hard to tune either. I've always wanted to try a Cunningham style 4x1bbl intake with some Carter Y's for the Desoto, ...

Re: Daily driver 354 vs 383
You're missing the point. If a head has less material that is made up by the intake manifold like the FE Ford then the volume will look kinda small even with a very large port. Besides this is way off topic. If you want to debate port size and flow of different engine families then it should be in a...

Re: low deck and tall deck Desoto ports
I've heard that too but no one has ever confirmed it. If they're the same size though then the low deck heads are better rebuild cores. The RB ones tend to crack in the chamber. This must be a casting flaw. Never happens with the little guys.

low deck and tall deck Desoto ports
Does anyone have the port sizes for the tall deck Desoto heads? I can measure the 291 ones I have myself but I don't have a set of 330/341 heads.

Yes, the port volume is only smaller becasue they're short, the openings are larger than average even for some big block engine families.

Re: Daily driver 354 vs 383
Hemis cam down surprisingly well. You'd think they'd be low end dogs with the huge ports but they're very common industrial engines. Don't bet on 20 mpg in a truck with either motor. I had a 1983 Dodge swb with a 1966 383, carter AVS and highway gears. It got around 18 on the highway, 15 in the city...

This is my old 1968 Fargo. I put it together back from the body shop in December, no engine, tranny, interior, wiring, etc in 2.5 weeks, in 35°F weather (inside, it was about 0°F outside) and drove it 2000 mile from Calgary, AB, Canada to Memphis TN towing my 1971 Valiant pro streeter. Helluva break...

Re: Daily driver 354 vs 383
Thanks. That engine is a 10.0:1 525+HP monster that runs on pump premium. Not really a driver motor but could be with a cam change. Early hemis are super-reliable as long as they're built right. Don't skimp on stuff that should be replaced like valve springs, rod bolts, main bolts and pistons. I'd r...

Re: Daily driver 354 vs 383
From a realistic standpoint the 383 is the way to go for your app. If you don't have heads already then save yourself the effort and get some 346's with hard exhausts (installed after) and have the holes opened up to 2.14/1.81 with a bowl hog by the machine shop and hand blend. You get the same or b...
